I tried to check for any transcription problems by comparing with all available OG and GMAT Prep sources. But I couldn’t get any leads. Is this an authenticated GMAT Prep question? I request the original poster to enlighten us after verifying his sources.

Hello Experts,

I don't think D can be the answer to this question. This question is a very simple question as we cannot compare French with Songs. But looks like OA marked has done so. Please provide your inputs. I have provided my reasoning against each option below:

a) Unlike the French, the German art songs are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic --> French cannot be compared to songs.
b) Unlike the French art songs, the German art songs are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic --> Only correct answer choice.
c) The German art songs, unlike the French, are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic --> French cannot be compared to songs.
d) The German art songs are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic, unlike the French --> French cannot be compared to songs.
e) The German art songs, which are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic, are unlike the French --> French cannot be compared to songs.

d) The German art songs are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic, unlike the French --> French cannot be compared to songs.
e) The German art songs, which are dramatic and sometimes almost operatic, are unlike the French --> French cannot be compared to songs.

Here "French" does not refer to the French people - it refers to the French art songs. The part "art songs" is omitted by virtue of parallelism.

However it seems that in option D the modifier "unlike the French" is misplaced. It should ideally touch "The German art songs". Thus B and C both are better than D. This does not seem to be a GMAT prep question - deleting tag.

Thank you, but how do we know it is not referring to the French people. On what basis are we rejecting option B?

Thank you. Now I understood your point. :)

I think this is a very bad level question.

Same question. How do we determine that it is not faulty parallelism but proper omission?

Although I can see that both (B) & (C) are correct, I chose (C) for its concision. Would that be a decision point ever on the real GMAT?
