Unlike the people whom travelled across the Atlantic Ocean during the early days, the hope of the travelers and discoverers who came to America during the colonial period was to acquire territory quickly.

Ans: E

'whom' is used as "object" (incorrect) - it should be replaced by 'who'(used as subject)

"Unlike X, Y": - The people have to be compared with travelers (not with their hopes) [parallelism]

Only option E corrects and follows the above error.

When we are using unlike we compare similar nouns/terms.

Like in this case we should compare the people to the other set of people . The only option which is correct is option E.

Below are the reasons for eliminating other answer choices

A. the people is compared to the hope .
B. same as A
C. That of the people is compared with the Traveller and discoverer. The sentence construction is wrong and awkward as well.
D. same as C
