But I picked e.
What's wrong with d? What's the differnece between d and e?

To answer your question there is nothing wrong with D. 
You probably went with E because you though that parallelism in the word THE in both the underlined and the non-underlined portion.
Between D and E, D is preferred because: (Look at the non-underlined portion after the underlined portion)
quiet, cooperative, communal, and even altrustic.
Xs have been found to be A, B, and even C --- In Answer choice D
The X has been found A, B and even C. --- In Answer Choice E
If you try to split the individual words, it doesnt make sense
X has been found quiet
X has been found cooperative
X has been found communal
and X has been found even altrustic
Have been found to be is correct usage.
You can normally say something like X has been found dead. In such a situation you explain a state. i.e. State = Dead.

unlike their close cousins ..The use of their( pronoun) clearly shows that the subject is plural and not singular....option e would have been correct , if the sentence had used his
read this sentence

now his clearly refers to " the mexican jay" and thus correct
That's my two cents.
