You can take the GRE since you are high up compare to the GMAT. GRE applicants usually do not see as generous offers with scholarships or at least that was in the past years but if you can get much closer to the 340, that may be helpful. Ultimately for top programs, your profile is much more important than the score.

Lower-ranked programs do like to give scholarships to high-scoring applicants since that helps them boost their rankings and bragging rights. GMAT is still however, the biggest bragging right.

Now, the big elephant in the room, getting an MBA after PhD is probably not unheard of depending on the field but Econ seems close by. If you are targeting T50, or even T30, this is not a big issue and they will welcome you as an asset to the program. However, high score will be essential to locking in a scholarship.

Your academic credentials are very strong and your quantitative ability well-established. Although your profile (PhD economics, tenure-track professor without corporate experience) is not typical for MBA candidates, it is intriguing to many programs, especially if you can clearly articulate your motivation for a career change and highlight transferable skills.

Targeting T50-100 MBA programs is realistic, and you may be competitive for scholarships, especially considering your background and financial need. The main challenge will be presenting a compelling case for why an MBA (now) is both logical and necessary, given your current career stage and expertise.

Hi all,

Mine is probably an unusual profile. I would appreciate the most honest advice or thoughts from you (even if harsh). I'll keep this post very short, but I'll be happy to share more either below or via dm if asked. Thank you all in advance.

Intended application cycle: next year (for the Fall 2027 entry cohort).

MBA goal: I am into economic consulting, though I am open to different academic/professional tracks. A big part of my motivation for the MBA is career change anyway.

Financial need: I will need full funding (or at least full tuition) for my MBA education. I have no issues doing RA/TA work as part of a scholarship package if available. I grew up in a low-SES household, and have been supporting my family financially. I hope to be admitted to a T50-100 program.

Test scores: GRE 327, which comprises a 168 Quant (87th percentile) and a 159 Verbal (80th percentile) (test date: May 2025). I haven't taken the real GMAT, but I scored 525 on the official practice test a couple of months ago, having never seen the exam before.

Educational background and professional experience: I obtained a PhD in Economics a few years ago, and since then, have been a full-time tenure-track professor at a selective liberal arts college teaching quantitative courses. I do not have any corporate or internship experience otherwise. I have always been in academia, and for this reason, my "extracurricular involvement and leadership experience" are only limited to faculty committee service, if this counts. No employment or unemployment gaps. I have several peer-reviewed publications.

All thoughts are welcome, but there are a few questions/issues I've been particularly grappling with:

(1) Standardized tests. As advertised by the ETS, the GRE is accepted by an increasing number of MBA programs. How true is this? Should I dedicate my time to the GRE or to the GMAT going forward?

(2) LORs. What is the optimal LOR strategy for my case? As stated above, I don't really have any industry references. However, FWIW, I have written dozens of LORs for my own students to support their internship/job/grad school applications. At my work, I am very collegial, collaborative, and creative as a team player.

(3) Resume. As I rework my academic CV into an MBA resume, is there anything in my profile that I should delete, or de-emphasize? Conversely, is there anything worth elaborating on?

(4) MBA admission consulting. Finally, I am willing to pay up to $7,000 for consulting services, especially with an experienced coach who genuinely believes in my potential. Should I go for this option? Do you happen to have any referrals?

Thank you all for your time!
