I had a bit of confusion as to ambiguity of 'as a result' in the option C. The sentence doesn't clarify 'damaged as a result' of what. Were the enzymes damaged due to 'invasion of toxins', or due to 'deployment of special enzymes', or a totally unrelated incident. Can you help me with this?

You can exclude ABDE, but I don't think the logic of using as a result at the end is correct. As a result = therefore. There is no causal relationship here. The xxresultxx is intended to mean that the DNA damage is caused by toxin... (DSB double strand break...)

Could anyone kindly explain why D is incorrect.
Also i find "as a result" at the end in option C a little odd- are such structure allowed.
Thanks in advance

(D) Special enzymes are deployed whenever man-made toxins invade the human body; they rebuild any damage that results to DNA strands.

When you use a sentence probably one of the most correct construction, and one of the favorites by GMAC, is: modifier + main sentence.

here, having two complete sentences separated by a semicolon does not have much sense. Also, they rebuild point out to what ? toxins or enzymes ?

However, contrary to the common belief among the two errors the "they" pronoun antecedent is less problematic between the two errors.

Because if I read the sentence and have a look to 'they" it clearly points to enzymes. Or at least a person with a bit of logic knows that the toxins cannot rebuild anything
