I am trying to figure out who would be the best person to write my second letter of recommendation (my current supervisor is writing my first).
I have 2 options:-
1. My previous supervisor- I worked with him for around one and a half years. He ranks me highly and knows my potential.
2. CEO of a new company- this person is a former managing director of a well known multinational who went on to start his own business. I worked with him on a partnership with my company for almost a year (at the same time when my previous supervisor was my boss). I probably spent more time working with him directly than with my boss. He would also have a number of specific examples to support my qualities.
Do schools generally prefer a supervisor for the 2nd recommendation rather than someone like my second option? Or does this vary from school to school? Would adcom view (2) as someone who is more likely to favor my case since his company has a partnership with my company?
I have copied below the information from the sites of some of the schools site that I am applying to.
a) Wharton- The Admissions Committee requires two recommendation letters, preferably from supervisors.
b) Columbia- The second recommendation should be from either a former direct supervisor or from another professional associate, senior to you, who can add personal insight into your candidacy.
c) Booth- The second letter can be professional in nature or from an organization, club or volunteer project with which you are associated - These letters can give us a different perspective of your skill sets outside of your professional environment. There is no preference on who supplies your second letter of recommendation; our only guideline is that it should add new and valuable insights to your application
d) Sloan- Please obtain only two recommendations on your behalf (three if you are applying to the BEP or LGO Program) from individuals who are able to speak with certainty about your professional achievements and potential.
I don't need to get all my second LORs from the same person. They are both supportive and I can get them to write it only for certain schools.
