New post 19 Aug 2008, 12:05
I am an international student from Pakistan with a GMAT score of 550 (Q:39/V:27: AWA:5.5) and recently admitted to SJSU (Lucas) for the Fall 2008 On Campus 2 year MBA.
However, I haven't received my Visa from the US embassy here in Islamabad, Pakistan. Classes start on August 25 and late registration continues till Sept 12. I have no clue as to when I will get the visa, but considering the fact that I will be missing a couple or even more classes, even if I decide to attend SJSU this fall, my question is, does anyone think that its a better idea to go to the next session? or it doesn't matter whether I miss a few classes?
Further more, here is a short profile of my credentials.
Age:26 (Pakistan : Muslim)
Computer Engineering Graduate with a 2.96 GPA.
6 months Internship as a Junior Design Engineer for Electronic Products.
1.5 Years experiece as an Inside Sales Represenative working for a US IT Reseller Company (EN Pointe Technologies - who had outsourced its operations in Pakistan. I have experience on a User Level in working in an ERP Software called SAP in the Sales and Distribution Module. I was involved in Order Management of various US customers including IBM, Taco Bell, Hoffman La Roche , Corning Cables, Union Bank of California, etc.
TOEFL iBT: 110 / 120
GMAT: 550
I am more interested to do an MBA for a career changer. Can I get help as to which area I should specialize as an IT background person.
I would appreciate it, if someone could help me out in giving me answers to the questions below as well.
1) Is the SJSU MBA a good choice?
2) Should I attend this session at SJSU despite the fact that I still await my visa and classes start next week (Aug 25)?
3) If I do miss out on this session, I'll have to give the application fee at SJSU again, and they have re - evaluate my application in order to give me admission in the January session? Is it advisable that if I have to go in January, I should retake the gmat and try to score better and try out other schools, if yes, please name few?
4) Do international students, especially MBA students get good jobs after studying at universities such as SJSU, considering that Santa Clara Univeristy and Stanford are in the same area. Do SJSU graduates have a fair chance at getting decent jobs?
5) If I start an MBA from SJSU, is it possible I can transfer to a better University in California like San Diego State (Universities that come under that CSU Educational System)?
I would extremely be gratefull if someone could analyze my scenario and reply back to me or send me an email at

Unfortunately I am only able to comment on two things:
1) I personally don't think it would be too problematic to miss a few classes at the start of the year, especially if it is a 2-year program. I recommend you contact the school to get their input on this issue and so that they're aware of your potential delay.

2) I'm not positive for the schools you are considering, but I think that many schools do not accept transfer students.

I'm sorry about your tricky visa situation. I wish you the best of luck!
