I think Tepper would be better for #2 because of CMU's overall reputation and their quant-heavy programme. One thing you might want to consider is that you're pretty much the archetypal Tepper student while you may more of a unique breed at Marshall. I'd pick Tepper regardless though unless you're really into working in California because I get the impression that Marshall is a programme in decay/on the brink of decay.

I actually echo this... I could not believe all the bad things I heard about Marshall speaking to their students... It was a shocker given they're already students there and I heard nothing like it from students at other schools... Their application fee was cheap and I wanted to apply to a warm weather school but I'm glad I won't have to go there. Reach out to some students and alumni if you're unsure. The weather and the alumni network were really the only good things I heard about USC. (coming from an applicant there)

You have a better shot at both your goals at Tepper.

I'm in the same boat and this was very helpful.

For me, I'm looking into getting into mgmt consulting (perhaps stretch MBB).

Tepper:
+ great student culture, very, very tight knit
+ smart faculty (6 nobel prizes)
+ top ranked for student satisfaction
+ high job placement
- heavy quant (i'm not an engineer background)
- cold

Marshall:
+ warm location
+ close to UCLA (maybe participate in their school events too? recruiting, etc.)
+ heavy emphasis on Asia.. could be a good bet
- poor performing recruiting center
- 2012 job placement was dismal. Could have been a blimp, but I don't want to risk $100K+ and 2 yrs of my life

Pretty sure Regina Regazzi would whoop your ass if she caught you at a UCLA CMC event as a Marshall student.

Hi all,

I've been accepted to both programs for fall 2013, no scholarships at either school :(

I need help deciding which school is the better choice for me. In terms of ranking, they're about the same, but I think CMU has a slight edge.

Some information about me and my goals...
background: tier 1/2 undergrad (top 50?), 3.4 gpa, engineering major, 6 years in IT consulting

future goals post mba. 2 options:
1) strategy/management consulting at MBB (i know that's a stretch at either schools), deloitte, monitor group, accenture, etc.
2) general/project/product management at a high tech company like google/microsoft/amazon/apple/ibm etc.

location post mba: I haven't decided on this yet. I'm open to both west and east coast, but definitely either LA, San Fran, NYC, or Boston. I know USC would have the edge in the west coast.

but given all that, what do you guys think is the best choice for me?

I'm going through this decision process right now. What did you decide?

Re: USC Marshall vs CMU Tepper [#permalink]
I can only speak for myself but I was deciding between Tepper and Foster and ended up deciding Tepper because of the strong tech and consulting placements and the reach of their alumni network. Tepper sends about 30% of their class to Seattle and Silicon Valley, but then they also have a strong alumni presence in the Midwest and along the East Coast. USC seems like more of a regional school placing about 80% on the West Coast so if you want to be in SoCal the rest of your career that may be a stronger option, but if you want some more options outside of SoCal, specifically in the Northeast then I think Tepper would be the stronger choice.
