Darden has just released its MBA Essay question and deadlines for the 2016-2017 application session. However the application is not live yet. If you have decided to apply to Darden this year, you may start preparing on how to tackle this essay
The essay really hasn’t changed from last year. They have, for yet another year stuck to a single essay approach in this application cycle as well.
Describe the most important professional feedback you have received and how you responded to this feedback.(500 words) You just have only one essay to bring the more personal aspects of your profile to light so use these 500 words judiciously. Here are few quick pointers on how to go about approaching this essay
1.Look back on your professional life right from the start of your career and jot down any feedback you received, from your colleague , your supervisor or subordinate.
2.Describe the situation for which you received the feedback. Your designation and experience level at that time.
3.Most importantly talk about what you learnt from that feedback.
4.You should be able to say how you changed yourself based on this feedback.
5.If you were able to take corrective action from the feedback , how did it reflect on your professional environment? In what way?
The key here is to show that you are receptive to any kind of opinion about yourself and humble enough to reflect on it, analyse, learn and grow.
Write the essay as if you were telling a story. You can start with the feedback and then proceed from there or start at the end and then reflect on the past. One example would be to start with kudos you were receiving at work that was because you had taken steps to act on a feedback you had received from a colleague few months back.
Here is a video post from last year from Darden’s Assistant Dean of MBA Admissions Sarah Neher where she talks about how to tackle this question
