Consider the below rule-
Any clause beginning with a relative pronoun (dependent clause) cannot contain the main subject or the verb.
according to above rule The artist’s most recent work cannot be the subject.
the subject is a series of canvasses . Also in a OF Cluase the subject is the object of OF CLAUSE ie canvasses.
canvasses is pural and should take pural verb.
So correct answer should be
D. primary colors are
A. primary colors, is
B. primary colors is
C. primary colors, are
D. primary colors are
E. colors, are primarily

Here the clause is used to describe more info about the artist's work. So without the clause the sentence should make complete sense.
Omitting the clause,
The artist’s most recent work is extraordinarily popular with interior designers specializing in hotels.
Here the subject is singular so verb should be singular. So options C, D, E are out.
Between A and B, we will choose A cause we need comma to separate the clause from main sentence.
So A is right.
