Official Solution:

Using a sophisticated echo technique similar to sonar, weather patterns can be detected by meteorologists.

A. Using a sophisticated echo technique similar to sonar, weather patterns can be detected by meteorologists.
B. Weather patterns are detected by meteorologists using a sophisticated echo technique similar to sonar.
C. Using a sophisticated echo technique similar to sonar, meteorologists can detect weather patterns.
D. An echo technique similar to sonar, and as sophisticated, can be used by meteorologists to detect weather patterns.
E. Meteorologists can, using a sophisticated echo technique similar to sonar, detect weather patterns.

Who uses a sophisticated echo technique? The original sentence must be corrected to reflect the fact that meteorologists, not weather patterns, use the technique. Other parts of the sentence should be clear and concise.
  1. This option incorrectly implies that weather patterns use a sophisticated echo technique.
  2. The wording of this option is awkward and confusing.
  3. This option correctly identifies that meteorologists use the sophisticated echo technique; the rest of the sentence is clear and concise.
  4. This option uses passive voice and creates confusion; active voice is always preferred for clarity.
  5. The phrase using a sophisticated technique similar to sonar is awkwardly placed in the middle of the sentence.

Answer: C
