Learning environment’s efficiency is determined by learning methods supported. What makes the difference is not the technology itself, but rather, the learning methods enabled and supported by the technology. The main learning theories are objectivism and constructivism. Objectivism is a teacher-centered learning method whose goal is to represent and transfer objective realities from the teachers to the learners. An objectivist environment supports the passive learning methods, in which the learners are passive recipients of instruction, acquiring common understanding from teachers, rather creating their own knowledge. In contrast with objectivism, constructivism is learner centered. In a constructivist environment, learners can control their learning paces. The role of teacher is to assist the learners in constructing their own knowledge.
Web-based virtual online classroom (WVOC) is designed in two components. Instructional communicating environment (ICE) is mainly used to transfer learning materials and promote teachers and learners to interact instantly. To improve interactivity, ICE also provides some efficient tools such as chat-room, bulletin board systems etc. Collaborative learning environment (CLE) encourages learners to explore and communicate freely. This environment provides for learners some other learning tools such as lecture video, chat-room, contextual discussing forums, frequently asked questions (FAQ) etc.

As per the passage, which of the following statements would the author probably agree with?

A. CLE is more similar to constructivist environment than ICE is.
B. WVOC does not support Objectivistic theory.
C. Networking sites form an integral part of ICE.
D. ICE and CLE use mutually exclusive sets of tools.
E. Teachers do not have any role in CLE.

Official Solution:

Learning environment’s efficiency is determined by learning methods supported. B. WVOC does not support Objectivistic theory.
C. Networking sites form an integral part of ICE.
D. ICE and CLE use mutually exclusive sets of tools.
E. Teachers do not have any role in CLE.

(A) Correct. Constructivist theory emphasise on student-centric learning in which students control their learning method and pace. Whereas ICE transfers learning materials from teachers to students and live interaction between students and teachers, the CLE suits more to students who prefer to explore study material on their own. Therefore CLE is more similar to constructivist learning than ICE is.

(B) WVOC supports Objectivist theory. The ICE component is designed in line with Objectivist theory.

(C) Although the passage mentions that ICE provides chat rooms, it does not mention anything about social networking sites.

(D) Chat-room is a common tool for ICE and CLE.

(E) Teachers are a part of the lecture videos used in CLE system.

Dear Expert,
is reason to eliminate option C is correct?
If I understood the passage correctly, the tools used by ICE and CLE are similar with different purpose, hence both have mutually exclusive sets of tools.

ICE: To improve interactivity, ICE also provides some efficient tools such as chat-room, bulletin board systems etc. - to support objectivism
CLE: Collaborative learning environment (CLE) encourages learners to explore and communicate freely - to support constructivism

Hope to hear from you. Many thanks.

Your query is not clear. Networking sites are not same as chat rooms. The passage mentions only about chat-rooms, but not about networking sites. Hence option C is wrong.

WHERE does it specify that teachers will be involved in lecture video? IT is completely ambiguous.

Doesnt CLE also feel like an instructional medium with FAQ's and lecture videos?
