Between option A and C how do you eliminnate option A. As paragraphs 1 and 3 support option A.

Good question!
Main idea RC questions are always scope-based and you have to always walk a fine line to figure out which answer is too narrow or too wide of a scope.

In this case, A) Outline the history of solar sailing, is too narrow. There are some historic mentions and references (e.g. when it was invented in P1 and again reinforced more in P3), but they are supporting elements rather than the main focal point. Mentioned in passing in second halves of 2 out of 5 paragraphs is not going to be the key focal point.

At the same time, you will never be able to have a clean and comfortable feeling with scope questions on the RC like you would in PS for example. On the harder questions especially, I was always split between two choices, one being too broad or too narrow and one being also good but not perfect, and always feeling like I was failing but this is normal as GMAT is adaptive. The key is not to agonize but to trust your training and your gut.
