I will go with D as well. I have a different reason for eliminating B than others. Even if 'they' were not ambiguous, it would not be in the right form to modify 'artwork'. Artwork is singular the proper reference is 'it'.
If the sentence began differently and said 'The paintings of Vincent Van Gogh...' then the word 'they' must be worked in to properly reference 'paintings'.
We know that artwork is singular, so "it" must be the proper pronoun restatement.
