sakshiagarwal96 - As I answered previously, the "to be" verb in this sentence is 'are'.

A great starting point would be our Grammar Book. I would highly encourage you to check the GMAT Grammar Book, which is available at no cost. This book is painstakingly created by our verbal experts and houses every grammar rule tested on the GMAT.

The main factors responsible for global warming arethe growth of coal based power plants and the releasing of greenhouse gases.

What is the verb here and why is 'growth' a noun?

The "are" is the verb.

Grow is a verb. Growth is a noun.

As for the reason why GROWTH is a noun, I'm not sure what to say. It is simply the noun form of the word, I think.

Edit: GROWING is also a noun form, I think.
