Below are Sentences from Official GMAT. I would like to know how the Verb+ING usage is correct? What does the modifier modifies?
1) Combining enormous physical strength with higher intelligence, the Neanderthals appear to have been equipped to face any obstacle the environment could put in their path, but their relatively sudden disappearance during the Paleolithic era indicates that an inability to adapt to some environmental change led to their extinction.
Does it mean Neanderthals are combining strength?
2) Ryunosuke Akutagawa‘s knowledge of the literatures of Europe, China and Japan was instrumental in his development as a writer, informing both his literary style and the content of his fiction.
Does it mean knowledge is informing style and content ?
I would like to know the rule of Verb+ING modifier.
