Kudos! This is a very good way to summarize the tenses, esp to show things such as Past/Present Perfect but I have to say "Future of the Past" and "Past of the Future" are hard for me to grasp. What does that mean?

Thank you

This is how I see it:

"Future of the Past": Time line between Past Event AND Present Event
"Past of the Future": Time line between Future Event AND Present Event

Ten days back, the student said that she would finish her homework in two days.

Present Event: When this statement is made. Time is NOW.
Student said: Past Event(10 days back from now)
Finish the homework in two days: Future of the past(2 days after the said event) OR past of the present(8 days back from now). Something between present AND main past event.

Likewise,

By the time one month summer vacation will be over, the student will have completed her homework.

Present Event: When this statement is made.
Vacation will be over: Future Event(1 month from now)
Will have completed: Future of the present(a time after now but before end of the vacation) OR past of the future(time before the end). Something between present AND future.

Hi Fluke!

Thanks for simplifying the explanation. you have rightly captured the essence.

Hi bb

Thanks for kudos!

Fluke, has rightly explained the perspective of past of furture and future of past.

Also, if you refer to chapter on 'Verb' from GMAT CLUB Ultimate grammar (gmat-grammar-book-verbs-96445.html) , you will see even the drawings there have such markings . . . see for example, in that post under Past Perfect Timline; you would notice that the two cross of 'eat' and 'arrive' are in middle of markings that represent 'past' and 'now/present'. . .

So in a way my chart is showing all those charts in one combined form - and we can get the perspectives in one go!

Also, point to be noted is the use of arrows or dots; highlighting the process was on from one point to another or completed within two points.

Just tried to put some sense into tenses; as i was going crazy understanding them. Visually they seem better
