Hi Everyone,

I have given my GMAT diagnostic test and score a 690 (Q51 V31). I finished the e-GMAT verbal course which helped me improve SC but my CR and RC are up in the air. Would be great if anyone can share how they managed to have that last stride of push to get V>40

I am aiming for a 740+ score so verbal is going to make or break my dreams

Thanks a lot

Hi logro,

CR and RC questions can be very tricky. Test makers set a lot of traps by using similar words to confuse students. There are high chances that you will end up being confused between two choices if you do not have a strong conceptual knowledge and do not use the right strategies to solve questions. Let me share my insights on how to improve your CR and RC skills.

Firstly, to solve CR questions, you need to develop the ability to pre-think the assumption before jumping into solutions. This can be done only when you have the proper understanding of the underlying framework. Most CR questions are based on a certain framework, so, understanding this will make life easier. Below is the comparison of how a student who uses general strategy solves a CR question and how a student who uses methodical approach solves the same.

General strategyMethodical approach
Read the argument Read the argument and identify the premise and conclusion
Read the question stemRead the questions stem and start pre-thinking
Jump into statements and evaluate each optionStart eliminating answer choices which do not match the pre-thought assumption

Here's the link to a video explaining the underlying framework for CR questions.

Coming to RC, you need to use the right reading strategies to read the passage and understand it completely. It is important to understand the purpose of the passage.Do not stuff yourself with the details while reading the passage because most RC questions are inferential questions. Below is the comparison of how a student who uses general strategy solves a RC question and how a student who uses methodical approach solves the same.

General strategyMethodical approach
Skim through the passage or read very slowly Read the passage to understand the role of each and every sentence
Focus on details and stuff yourself with themFocus on the purpose of the passage

There is a reading strategy called "Involved and Evolved Reading" which helps you read the passage effectively. You can understand the gist of the approach by watching the following video.

So, I would suggest you to work on your methodology because GMAT is not the test of concepts but a test of application of concepts. The stronger your application skills, the better your score will be. Hope it helped.
