The number of questions you miss is only one factor underlying your GMAT verbal score. The difficulties of the questions you miss and get correct matter as well.
So, for example, you can score V38 on the GMAT with anywhere from around 5 to 11 missed counted (as opposed to experimental) questions depending on the levels of difficulty of the questions you missed or got correct.
Still, there are normal, or common, numbers of questions that people miss to get certain verbal scores.
A common number of counted questions to miss to score V42 is 4 or 5. If you want to take uncounted questions into account as well, we could say that a normal number to miss to score V42 is 6.
A common number of counted questions to miss to score V38 is 7 or 8. If you want to take uncounted questions into account as well, we could say that a normal number to miss to score V38 is 9.
