I was in the same boat...very high quant and very low verbal. I went through multiple books and tried free trials...in the end for me the best solution for verbal was the e-gmat online course. It was really helpful as it helped me make the verbal questions more structured and logical. Also, i realised that as opposed to quant; verbal is easier to learn though audio-visual lessons.

I would recommend that you try the e-gmat free trial and go though couple of topics to see if their style suits you. Good luck!

Hi BEWL,

Before I can offer you the specific advice that you’re looking for, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) How long have you studied?
2) What materials have you used?
3) How have you scored on each of your CATs (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?

Goals:
4) When are you planning to apply to Business School?
5) What Schools are you planning to apply to?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

Hi EMPOWERgmatRichC

Thank you very much.
Here you can find an answer on your questions.
1) 1.5 month
2) the official gmat book (verbal and quant) and a quick view on some of the strategy books (1week) of manhattan prep (only verbal parts).
3) 610(Q:49 , V: 25) and 620 (Q: 47 V: 28)

4) I want to start in September next year, so I need to apply before march/april
5) University of Sankt-Gallen, HEC paris, London business school, Essec

Hi BEWL,

Many Test Takers spend 3 months (or more) of consistent study time before they hit their 'peak' scores, so it's likely that you just have not put in enough time and effort yet. With your score goal, you will likely need another 1-2 months of consistent, guided study. Thankfully, the Verbal section of the GMAT is just as predictable as the Quant section is, so you CAN train to score at a higher level.

1) Have you scheduled your next GMAT yet (and if so, then when is it?)?
2) How many hours do you think that you can study each week going forward?

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich

BEWL
Hi

I did my Gmat exam but the result was not as expected. I scored a 50 on the quantitative part but a 20 on the verbal part. So my total score was not good. I had a 590.
I want to have at least 680-700. I think this is possible if I do my verbal part much better.
Have you any suggestions how I can improve my verbal part? Which courses do you suggest (online, in person, ... )? I live in Belgium.
I think the problem is not the difficulty of the exercises but the time. I alway need to guess the last 10 questions in the verbal part.

Thanks in advance

Hi BEWL,

Your score reflects a clear lack of fundamentals in the Verbal section. Since you have not really gone through the fundamentals, I would recommend you to refrain from taking tests until you have gone through all the fundamentals.

You need to build the concepts/fundamentals before you jump in solving the problems. You can do so by choosing one of the following ways:
1. In person classes/private tutoring
2. Online classes
3. Self paced online preparatory course
4. Book heavy approach

Whatever you choose, make sure that you choose one. Because GMAT tests you on some concepts and fundamentals that you can learn from a course. Most of the preparatory companies including ours offer a free trial of our course. You can take the trial and see if the course suits your needs.

In addition to the preparatory material, buy the Official Guides(both the Official Guide and the Verbal Review), Question Pack 1 and the 4 official mock CATs. They should be an indispensable part of your preparation.

You need close to 3 months to prepare well for the GMAT.
1. Understand the concepts and fundamentals before jumping into problem solving
2. Solve full length CATs including AWA and IR. You can get two free GMAT Prep mock CATs and can purchase two more from mba.com
3. Make sure you solve the official questions from the Official Guide

Hi BEWL,

The SC section is the easiest verbal section to make improvements on. Once you understand how to think and approach this question type, there are only so many ways you can be tested. Here at GMAT Pill we developed the 10 core frameworks which detail the 10 ways to approach GMAT sentence corrections.

Here is a sample video detailing one of the core frameworks: https://www.gmatpill.com/gmat-practice-t ... stion/2184

The RC score could definitely use some improvement. To improve RC - you really need visual guidance. Don't read articles about how to improve reading. You improve by actually doing or watching someone else do.

That's why you might find these video walkthroughs helpful: https://www.gmatpill.com/practicequestio ... tions.html

For CR, we recommend a visual framework approach to help you understand the complex short passages and how each item relates to each other.

Here is a video describing the visual framework approach: https://www.gmatpill.com/criticalreasoni ... Estate.mp4

Best of luck on your studies!
