If you’re choosing between classic and focus editions, decide what you like or hate more sentence correction or data insights section.

As an LSAT test taker, you should be able to do really well on the verbal section.

You can always address any quantitative concerns that admissions may have by taking an MBA math course….

But your time is running out to take the classic GMAT… that would be my only concern is that you only have about six weeks left and likely it will be a mad rush for test center spots at the end of January.

I would not have any concerns whatsoever about GM that has been around for decades. It will still be dominating admissions. We have been running a poll about people applying in 2024 round one and majority is still planning to apply with the classic gym score… surprisingly so lots of folks are kind of on the score and you definitely will not be an odd man or woman out.

What schools do you plan to apply to?

Even though you can score 750 with Q44 if your Verbal score is high enough, many schools prefer to see a Q47+ Quant score, and at least Q49 is what many would really prefer. So, if you're planning to apply to highly competitive schools, then you'll have to be fairly strong in Quant regardless of how strong you are in Verbal.

Thank you for the response! I plan to apply to top schools. I plan to do entrepreneurship through acquisition and that’s best from HSW, so I plan to shoot for those even if it means reapplying. I was not aware that schools cared about the individual section scores and that’s surprising since they don’t report them.

Thank you for the response! I plan to take my first attempt within the next 6 weeks regardless of which test version. I would definitely lean towards doing better on SC than DI just because that’s more of a wildcard for everyone. Would that make you think I should hammer SC and geometry for a few weeks and take a crack at the old gmat first?

I’m surprised to hear most folks are still taking the old gmat for R1 2024, do you think that’s just because it’s more familiar? It seems like the focus score being a little harder to interpret could benefit the marginal applicant.

Hi! I can confirm the Focus Edition treats each section equally, while there is greater weightage given to one's Verbal score on the Classic version. But I wouldn't be so quick to make light of Sentence Correction and Geometry. Both are quite heavy topics to study unless you have a knack for SC and remember high school Geometry well. The classic version closes by the end of January.

PS: I've taken the classic and given almost all mocks for the Focus Edition. I personally found it a lot easier to score in both Quant and Verbal in the latter test.

Thanks for the response! So you’re saying you think the focus tests are easier to do better overall? Because they’re more consistent or some other reason?

Ultimately, the classic version will no longer be available after January. If you have the flexibility, one option could be to take the classic and, later on, take the Focus in case you feel you're missing out for any reason.

Thanks for the response. Do you think having taken both will matter with regards to adcoms? (Tough question I know). I feel like the classic score would override a (hopefully better) focus score later on due to the ambiguity with the new test, but that might not be true.

Yes, they actually do, partly because a weak section score can indicate a skill deficiency that may cause an applicant to have trouble with handling aspects of the coursework.

For some tips you can use to achieve a high score on either version of the GMAT, see this post.

Anytime!

I initially noticed the score equivalents for Verbal had lower scores showing higher percentiles - https://gmatclub.com/forum/gmat-focus-t ... l#p3276792
But it looks like the opposite is true for Quant.

The easier scoring was likely a me-thing. If you're good at SC and can figure out Geometry in the time you have left, the classic version might just be a better option - school preferences considered.

The adcoms I've interacted with tend to look at multiple attempts (even those across versions) with grace. They seem to view them as a sign of one's dedication to improving. They're also very adamant about claiming to treat the two tests the same, but I'm kind of skeptical about this bit myself.
