While no CAT is bullet proof, in general I've found the Veritas practice tests to be reliable in generating scores. (I have no business connection to Veritas prep by the way). Most likely, the pattern in which you got those 8 questions wrong had the adaptive test move you down to easier questions which you then got mostly correct. Take a look at the pattern of incorrect answers. It's the likely explanation for a high % correct but lower aggregate verbal score.

Yes the first two wrong questions penalized me hard and then the test started throwing easier questions.
But I do not concur with such algo which works this way in which just first 2 wrong qsns decide your range :(

This is in line with the GMAT algorithm (although it's a pretty tightly kept secret). One of the things I spend a significant amount of time on during our 90 minute GMAT Readiness Assessment. It's free and I'm happy to get into the many key elements of the GMAT algorithm and the many other key things that make it different than any other Math or English test you've ever taken.

Might be helpful to gauge yourself with Official Mocks. The entire testing experience itself will also be factored in that way.
