Good Paul. Poingnantly is an adverb and poignancy (a noun) is more right here. A and B would be left out and B surely is right.

OA given is D.!!! I think D makes sense and is a very elegant sentence . B is also correct grammatically but D wins for elegance and brevity.
I dont think D is incorrect in comparing voice with thomas hardy..if that's the case then B also compares the voice with thomas hardy .
More comments are welcome.
I fear that what will happen if such SC's pop up in first 5 questions.:(

D is the right choice. I have a small explanation as to how i arrived at this.

Both the incidences of Thomas and Emily seem to have happened before the death of Mary Webb. Past Perfect would be the best choice in both the cases. Since none of these choices seems to have a proper coupling in past perfect, I seem to be inclined more towards the choice D.
