Best Methods to Cover Quants?

Hey all..!

Im taking the gmat on the 30th of june..although verbal seems a *complain*..iv made good progress using the MGMAT SC and Powerscore CR guides..

My Question is..how do i learn all the concepts of math effectively? i wish to take up full tests around mid may..hope to complete rc by that time..so how do i learn both the basic and advanced concepts of math and also the strategies for ps and ds at the same time?

If you want a complete set you can buy the MGMAT math books 1-5, they will go over everything covered on the GMAT. I would recommend that you take a practice test and identify problem areas. Then buy the corresponding books. The advanced strategies in the back of each MGMAT book are helpful if you already have a good base of knowledge. When they go over each section they also discuss DS strategies for each kind of problem.

If you are not attempting any course & trying to go for the self study, I would suggest "MGMAT or Veritas Quantiative Guides". These are quite helpful in developing basic & advanced quantiative skills.

Yep, nothing beats the MGMAT quant guides, is you religiously follow its procedures, you will find your problem areas reducing. I can find significant development after every guide I finish.

Thanks you all! i concur! i have the MGMAT Number Prop and Word Translations guides..problem is..takes a long time to finish one book! and difficult to remember all the strategies! ..

If you don't have enough time to go thru all the mgmat guides, I would suggest that you take their CATs and focus on the weak areas in the corresponding guide/chapter. The cool thing about MGMAT CATs is, they give a detailed analysis, so u know where to focus when short of time.

Is that so? i saving up the CATs cos i haven't studied all concepts of math yet..so does it make sense to study the basics and attempt the CATs?

Depends on the time you can allocate between now and the test date. If you can go through all the 5 quant guides, then it is logical to save the 6 CATs until after you finish them all. But if you don't have so much of time, atleast give them a quick glance and use the first 2-3 CATs to analyze your weakness areas and prepare in-depth on these concepts. You would still be left with the rest of mgmat CATs and also GMAT Prep's 2 CATs.

The Manhattan GMAT guides are great for learning the concepts covered in the quantitative section. Personally, I don't think that CATs should be used as study guides. Each Manhattan GMAT book has a Question Bank with 25 questions that cover the range of topics for that guide. The questions range in difficulty from 300-500 all the way to 700-800 questions. If you need more practice go through the GMATClub problem sets. These problem sets will let you know where your weak areas are. Save the CATs to use for guaging your progress as you get through the guides. 
Have you done the Official Guide questions as well?

Well.. there are specific methods like Venn's diagramm and there are general methods to solve equations, so what do you need?
From general methods, I like
ZIP (C) Bunuel) - before solving a problem, making sure whether the variables in your problem are Zero? Integers? Positives?
Numbers substitution: when you face smth like what is X if ax= -x, the easiest way is to insert numbers and solve it.

As everyone else has already stated, the Manhattan guides are fantastic. Beyond that, though, make sure to practice with as many high-quality problems as possible. And fully read all of the explanations. Good sources include the OG, GMATClub tests, and Jeff Sackmann's math sets. It will be a little tight with your schedule, but you can still accomplish all of this.

The are sold via his site. I would recommend, however, to stay with GMATClub tests - they are much cheaper than Jeff's sets and do great job in boosting your quant score (I improved from 40 to 49)

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably do that. Quant is probably going to be my weaker link, at least in the 40+ levels.
