So I plan on enrolling in school in Fall 2012, and need to take the GMAT (for the first time).

I need help figuring out how to best go about studying for this exam. I am assuming I should take my first attempt at it within a month or so?

The programs I have are (as recommend by this site):
-The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 12th Edition
-Manhattan GMAT Set of 8 Strategy Guides, Fourth Edition (Manhattan GMAT Strategy Guides)
- The Official Guide for GMAT Quantitative Review, 2nd Edition

I would like to know what my first step would be in regards to studying and more specifically with the books that I have. Should I take the free diagnostic test before doing anything? If so, what step should I take after that?

Any tips regarding any of my concerned mentioned would be greatly appreciated. I have browsed the site, but I am somewhat overwhelmed because I really do not know where to begin with all of the books I have!

First step is to take the first prep test offered by the GMAT. You can download it from mba.com after registering there :)

After you take the prep test, make sure to note down the scores somewhere because you wont be able to go back to it after you press "Next"

Post your scores here... After that, we can work on the strategy!

Ok, so I take the free practice exam. I scored significantly worse on the quantitative section and just okay on verbal. Needless to say I am not at all satisfied.

Where do you guys recommend I go from here? I posted previously the books/courses I have purchased and am now also considering a tutor.

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated.

Hi,

You may follow the list below:
- If you believe in target based studies, set a target date for GMAT.
- Use the Official guide 12th ed. For more practice questions use the OG Verbal review and Quant review - both 2nd Ed .
- Use Manhattan material for Sentence Correction, am sure you have 6 MGMAT CATs, these CATs are very useful. Start writing CATs only after you have completed the entire course.
- For CR buy Powerscore Bible.
- For Quant just brush up your basics and practice as much as possible, keep a track of your mistakes and put in effort to ensure you do not repeat the same mistakes.
- For verbal, the books suggested above will help you build the foundation and master the techniques.
- Keep the mba.com CATs for the end they are the closest to real GMAT so take them a week or 10 days before the real thing and mark you weak areas.
- If you need classroom assistance, join Manhattan courses.

About how to start:
For Quant - take one chapter at a time from the OG and make notes.
For verbal - same thing study and make notes one chapter at a time. Do remember verbal is the percentile enhancer in GMAT, i learnt it the hard way, spend time on mastering verbal, quant is easy to score with some practice.

I have divided my week into CR/SC/RC days and make sure i do some quant questions everyday.
