Hello,
I have been studying for the GMAT for about 1 and a half months now. I work full time usually around 45 to 50 hours a week. I have been studying 4 hours on Saturday/Sunday and 1 to 2 hours a week night (depending on how rough my work day was). When I first started I hadn't taken any math in probably 5 to 6 years. And as I expected I was very unprepared for the Quant section.
I read the Kaplan book and did the practice material online. On the CAT tests I got 590, 660, 590, 600. I usually go through and review the questions until I know how I got them wrong. On these tests my Quant score is what usually kept my score down (as I usually get between a 38 to 43 on the verbal). As my Quant was holding me back I decided to focus only on Quant problems. I read and did all the problems in the Official GMAT Quant review book and got about 85% of the almost 300 questions right.
Recently though my Quant score has gone up considerably but my verbal has been the lowest its been. I got another 600 on the practice test as my Q43 V31 suprised me. I feel like I have made some progress on the Quant seciton but lost the momentum I had on the verbal as I haven't put much effort into reviewing to focus all my time on the Quant.
I know that practice tests aren't an official indicator of how I would do on the GMAT but it does give me feedback on how well I'm progressing and it helps me with the timing of the secitons.
My question is how should I now approach preparing for the GMAT? I don't have a timeline for taking the test as I
plan on applying to schools for 2013 fall semester and I want to be sure of my preparation before I take the test. I still have the Official guide to the Verbal section that I plan on reviewing to help increase the poor verbal performance I recently have had. Any tips on improving on the Quant section as I feel I have hit a wall with some of the questions?
Any other tips on studying? I was trying to avoid paying the large fees of classes but I may look at purchasing practice problems from some sites.

Are you thinking about taking the test after June 5th? Also, do you want your weakest section is in Verbal and/or Quant?

Dude, I am exactly where you are at, work weeks, amount of study and score range. I can tell you that for your verbal which is very similar to what I have been getting, that the actual test will be harder. As such, while I think I am great at verbal and is not representative of my practice verbal scores, its probably going to be that . You have to hit the verbal hard and systematically like the math. As for the math, I am exactly where you are at. Get the Manhattan GMAT books and break down your fundamentals. Once you have taken most of the OG12 questions, create an error log to track all your wrong questions. From there break down your fundamentals again. Then work on harder problems. Get them wrong? Use your error log. Break down your fundamentals. Work on hard problems. Get them wrong? Use your error log again. Then again, break down your fundamentals. At a certain point, your going to have a strong foundation and base that allows you to be strong and agile to hand various questions. You should be at a solid 45-47. To get past 47. Its going to require a new fundamental understanding that is more conceptual than anything else. Again, you have to break down your fundamentals from a conceptual standpoint and build it back up. The key perspective I learned here is while I was learning to be a 600 level tester, the fundamentals I learned did not include the conceptual understanding because I was just to learn to walk let along run.
Its a long and arduous journey my man. Funny thing is I am in banking where most post-MBA grads want to be yet I can't bust out a 700. Figure that flying squirrel.
