Hey all, just took the GMAT for the first time yesterday and scored a 750. I'm very excited about my score; I'll be posting a debrief soon. But first a question: My unofficial score report gave me a 750 (Q49, V44). Looking through some past GMAT Club posts, it seems like several people have scored the exact same Q and V scores yet ended up with a 760 overall:

I know the GMAT scoring is complex and esoteric, but what gives? 760 was actually my pie-in-the-sky, don't-think-I'll-make-it goal. Is there a chance the official score report will reflect something different, or does the GMAT actually calculate different overall scores for testers with the same Q and V scores depending on which questions they answered right?

Hi astryker, I'd say the chances of your score changing on the official score report are low. That tends to happen only if there was a mistake with the algorithm or scoring criteria, which is always possible, but not particularly likely. Maybe you'll get lucky and it will have gone up on the report, though!
As for the 49/44/750 question, I believe the GMAT behaves as a microcosm of grading you've already seen many times in your life: I.E. you got an A and your friend got an A, but that doesn't mean you both got the exact same score. Maybe you got 91 and he got 93, but your grading system makes everyone above 90 an A. If you think about the granularity of the Q and V scores, there's a pretty good chance that there's wiggle room within each score. If it helps, you're probably right on the cusp of 760, but generally with a 750 you should be happy and not too concerned about potentially moving 10 points up or down. So, congrats and don't dwell on it too much, 750 is a terrific score!
