Dear Experts and Fellow Members of GMAT Club,
I took the GMAT for the first time last week and I would like to share my experience with you all. When I started my preparation for GMAT 3 months back, I majorly concentrated on verbal. Being a non native speaker, I knew my weakness. I read all the relevant books - Manhattan for SCs and RCs, Powerscore for CRs. I solved all the problems of OG and many 700+ level questions of GMAT club verbal forum. I gave Kaplan's 6 CATs and got scores of 31, 33, 34, 31, 36 and 38 in verbal section. I was confident that I would score well (altleast 35+) in the verbal section in actual GMAT.
But when I got my actual scores - it read Q50, V27. V27???? I got 31 in the first CAT I ever took. Now, I am not able to understand what went wrong and what should I do now. My target score is 720+ and I need some guidance on what should I do to get that score. I am ready to do ANYTHING and EVERYTHING to get to that score.

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. If you can answer a few questions, then we should be able to figure this out:
When you took your CATs:
1) Did you take the ENTIRE CAT each time (including the Essay and IR sections)?
2) Did you take them at home?
3) Did you take them at the same time of day as when you took your Official GMAT?
4) Did you ever do ANYTHING during your CATs that you couldn't do on Test Day (pause the CAT, skip sections, take longer breaks, etc.)?
5) Did you ever take a CAT more than once? Had you seen any of the questions BEFORE?
During your studies, were these Kaplan CATs the only ones that you took or did you use any of the Official GMAC CATs too? I ask because the scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. The most realistic CATs available are the 6 from GMAC (the 2 free CATs, and each of the 2 that come with Exam Pack 1 and Exam Pack 2), so assuming that you plan to retake the GMAT, it would be useful to know how you perform on one of those CATs next.
