Hi Everyone,
I need your valuable feedback on my plan for cracking the GMAT. Sorry for my long passage
First to give a brief about myself. I had a Bachelors in Instrumentation Engineering from Anna University Main Campus, India and a Masters in Electrical Engineering from NUS, Singapore. And I have been working for 5 years in Singapore as an Electrical Engineer in a well known Oilfield industry. I got PR and am planning to leave for Canada by end of next year 2019 and pursue my MBA then. I have chosen list of colleges already including ROTMAN, HEC MONTREAL, JOHN MOLSON, SAUDER, ALBERTA and DESAUTELS with preference in that order. I have researched on average GMAT scores in these colleges and it was around 650 - 700. So I am targeting a score of 700.
I have started preparation two weeks back (from 1st December). Anyway, I am not tightly constrained by time as I have about a year to finish up GMAT and to initiate application processes. But I plan to finish GMAT and get my target score by mid of next year (May or June 2019).
This is how I started prep.
1. Chose the colleges where I wanna go and its average GMAT score, setting which as my target score
2. Started reading OG 2016 (Only book which I have now which I got from my friend and hence never bought OG 2019)
3. Took diagnostic test got "Excellent" in PS and DS however as I suspected got only "Average" and "Above Average in RC, SC and CR.
4. Made some clear decisions on Way Forward for QUANT:
Brush up of quantitative concept and shortcuts
Practice to improve calculation speed
Avoid silly mistakes with improved concentration
Regular practice with question to understand pattern and common pitfalls
5. For Verbal, I am not so sure about how to proceed.
6. This is what I currently do and plan to continue doing:
1. Take ~20 PS, ~20 DS, ~10 RC, 10 SC, 10 CR from OG 2016 practice questions daily. (~ 2 to 5 hours incl. review of correct + wrong answers)
2. Will reduce this number of questions when I am tight on work but never skip practicing.
3. I am planning to take first diagnostic test after finished reviewing OG 2016 full.
4. Then depends on diagnostic test score planning to prepare further buying additional materials (if necessary)
And side by side I started reading some journals including The Economist, now and then. Also using cue cards to build vocabulary.
Will my approach work?
And I need your feedback on how to plan after Step 4 in case Verbal never kicked up for me.
While taking Quant section from practice questions, I sometimes get one or two silly mistakes which I will try to learn and avoid moving on with prep. Time comes up about 2 mins for each question.
In RC, finding difficulty reading passages and time usually exceeds slightly above 2 mins per question. And getting at-least 20%to 40% wrong. Some silly due to less concentration and most I really don't know why.Only after reading explanation it is revealing to me.
In CR, I get at most 40% wrong by choosing wrong option over right option (always confuse between two choices). It is only the choices that is messing me up and sometimes miss key points.
SC is comparably better than others getting one or two mistakes (may be I am trying only easy questions)
Any suggestion on improvement or change in approach are welcome.

To start, you've given yourself plenty of time to study - which is good. The OG books are great sources for practice questions, but they're not designed to teach you Tactics, patterns or the little 'secrets' behind the GMAT - for those, you'll need Course-oriented materials. To that end, you might consider working on the OG a little later on in your studies. Since you have put in some study time already, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). That score will give us a good sense of your current strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

Looking at your study routine, I see that you are following a plan that I call “practice first and figure the rest out later.” In other words, you are doing practice problems before understanding the concepts on which those problems are based, and thus you are trying to learn solely from reading solutions to problems. Following such a study plan will lead to disorganized studying and ultimately hold you back from improving your quant and verbal skills. Thus, in addition to using your current resources, you may consider using a resource that allows you FIRST to learn the concepts and strategies related to GMAT quant and verbal and SECOND to practice with a large number of realistic questions.
