Follow the following study plan:-
..

Thank you. I'll take a look at it!

A question: I have seen that many of those GMAT takers who scored 700+ used Manhattan and MGMAT books (among others);

Would it be recommended to mix different books or should I stick to one books + OG ? I want to avoid over-saturating myself with many different books.

Also, say I take Manhattan course, would it be wise to stick to their books? Or is it common to take a course with one company and use books of another company?

Hi DanielEMZ,

Since it sounds like you're just beginning your studies, then it would be a good idea to take a FULL-LENGTH practice CAT Test; you can take 2 for free at www.mba.com (and they come with some additional practice materials). If you want to do a little studying first, so that you can familiarize yourself with the basic content and question types, then that's okay - but you shouldn't wait too long to take that initial CAT. That score will give us a good sense of your natural strengths and weaknesses and will help provide a basis for comparison as you continue to study. A FULL CAT takes about 3.5 hours to complete, so make sure that you've set aside enough time to take it in one sitting. Once you have those scores, you should report back here and we can come up with a study plan.

When it comes to studying for the GMAT, there are lots of different study materials that you might choose to use. Most GMAT Companies offer some type of free materials (practice problems, Trial Accounts, videos, etc.) that you can use to 'test out' a product before you buy it. We have a variety of those resources at our website (www.empowergmat.com). I suggest that you take advantage of all of them, then choose the one(s) that best match your personality, timeline and budget.

I'd like to know a bit more about your timeline and goals:
1) What is your goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools do you plan to apply to?

Thank you Sir; I'd say around 700.

I have heard that not all of the sections on the GMAT are graded. Is it true?

Hi DanielEMZ,

Not all QUESTIONS are 'scored' (some are 'Experimental' - meaning that they are in the 'testing phase' before they appear as live/scored questions on anyone's Exams). Each of the 4 sections (re: Quant, Verbal, Integrated Reasoning and AWA/Essay) are all scored - but only the Quant and Verbal sections contribute to your overall Score out of 800; the IR and Essay scores are separate. Some Schools/Programs don't care much about the IR and Essay Scores - but you might want to research the specific Programs that you're interested in in more detail regarding how they view the various GMAT data points. In that way, you better define your GMAT goals and prepare the most effect application for each Program that you apply to.

I want to reiterate how important it is to take that initial practice CAT/mock, so you should plan to take it soon (perhaps this weekend). Once you have your results, you should post back here (or you can PM or email directly if you like) and we can discuss the results.

Then why do people mostly concerned with the overall score out of 800 and not also the IR and AWA? Is it because business schools usually don't care about these and most people here, I assume, are wanting to apply to business schools?

Thank you Rich!

Hi DanielEMZ,

Since Business Schools tend to be primarily interested in each Applicant's Score out of 800, then that is why most GMATers tend to focus more on the Quant and Verbal sections (and not the IR or Essay sections). In addition, there are lots of different Quant and Verbal content to learn - along with the Tactics, patterns and little 'secrets' to each section - so it takes a lot longer to learn all of that than it does to prepare for the IR and Essay sections. It's worth noting that many Programs do expect Applicants to be able to score at least a 4.0 (out of 6.0) on the AWA portion of the GMAT, but that is a task that's fairly straight-forward (meaning that if you follow a proper Essay 'template' and refer to the specific details in the Essay prompt, you should be able to earn that type of Score without too much practice).

So, all of these belong to the Quant and Verbal, 200-800:

PS= Problem Solving
DS= Data Sufficiency math questions
RC= Reading Comprehension verbal question
SC= Sentence Correction verbal question
CR= Critical Reasoning verbal question

While these are not part of the 200-800:
IR= Integrated Reasoning
AWA= the Analytical Writing Assessment, the essay-writing section

Correct?

You have been so helpful. Thanks a lot!

Hi DanielEMZ,

Yes - that is the breakdown of which question types impact each sub-score.
