Hi gloomybison,

The scoring algorithm on the Official GMAT is far more complicated than most people realize. Since that algorithm is proprietary, no GMAT company has an exact match for it, thus CAT/mock scores can vary a bit based on the 'biases' involved in their respective designs. In addition, there are a variety of factors that can impact your performance on an individual Exam - including the type of Exam that you're using, the time of day that you start the Exam, the testing conditions, how well-rested you are, etc. It's possible that you simply had a 'bad day' when you took this recent CAT. Since you have not taken any of the 6 Official CATs yet, I suggest that you take one of those Exams next - and make sure to take it in a realistic fashion that matches-up with what you will face when you take the Official GMAT (take the FULL CAT - with the Essay and IR sections, at the same time of day as when you'll take the Official GMAT, if you will be at a Test Facility, then wear a face mask, etc.). Once you have that Score, you should post back here (or you can feel free to PM me) and we can discuss the results and how you might best proceed with your studies.

Before I can offer you any additional advice, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on your timeline and your goals:

1) What is your overall goal score?
2) When are you planning to take the GMAT? Are you planning to take the At-home GMAT or are you planning to take your GMAT at a Test Facility?
3) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

Hi gloomy bison,

First, that Princeton score is clearly an outlier. You've been practicing at the V30+ level consistently on some practice tests from solid companies (like Veritas and Manhattan).

That being said, to avoid a similar drop again and to maximize your score on the actual test, it's a good idea to focus on identifying your Test Taking Skill gaps. When there's inconsistency of scores between practice tests, then there's a risk of it also happening on the real test. And it's not the not the result of a lack of concept knowledge. It's almost always the result of a gap in Test Taking Skills.

We offer a FREE 90 minute diagnostic session -- it's live online in a practice test with a GMAT performance coach. You'll are amazed by the insights into your gaps and the focus it will give the rest of your prep. And it's totally FREE.

Hi Folks,
I have a question regarding the study plan,

I started studying for gmat after ı took a mock in August and took my second mock in November after studying about 3 months. During this 3 months, working 1-2 hour per day, ı have completed OG verbal guide and verbal part of Princeton review 1138 Questions Book.
After the second mock, not seeing any success, ı have accelerated the work schedule for last 1,5 month and started to work at least 3-4 hours per day and +6-7 hours on week-ends. I try to beef up my reading comprehension skills by reading few articles from Economist every day and for the last 2-3 week ı enrolled in TTP course, which ı liked so far, to overhaul my verbal and quant,

I have been doing mocks for the last 2 months and my scores were around 600-650. However today I scored a disastrous 490 in a mock and ı got shocked; though ı didn't expect a stellar improvement, ı didn't expect such an abysmal score either.

My main problem in mocks is that English is not my native language, so it can get extremely difficult for me to understand complex passages in verbal, forcing me to re-read and lose time. (Though it wasn't the case for my last disastrous mock, I though everything was going great in mock exam just to see a dooming result :( )

You can check my mock scores below, ı didn't take official mocks now since ı don't want to waste them yet. This inconsistency in mocks and not having a steady improvement is terrifying me

Do you guys have any sincere advice on what ı should do?

Mocks -Total Score - Verbal -Quant - Date
Veritas - 590 - 28 - 43 - 04/08/2021 (First Mock)
Veritas - 590 - 30 - 42 - 28/11/2021 (Second Mock after 3 months of study)
ExpertsGlobal - 680 - 39 - 44 - 11/12/2021
E-gmat - 660 - 33 - 47 - 19/12/2021
Manhattan -660 - 35 - 44 - 26/12/2021
Princeton Review -490 - 12 - 46 - 08/01/2022

Thank you,

Consider the 490 to be an outlier and carry on. Take an official practice test in a couple of days. That will help you get a baseline (I expect it will be in the 600 - 650 range).
Mocks of different companies will not give you consistent scores. Also, don't focus on the scores but on identifying your areas of improvement and then invest time in improving those. That is the actual use of practice tests.

Hi gloomybison,

I'm happy to help. Can you paste in a screenshot of your TTP analytics page, so I can see what is going on with your TTP course?

Hi gloomybison,

First of all, official mocks are believed to be the most reliable and closest one to the actual GMAT exam as it follows a similar algorithm. It helps you analyse where you stand in terms of your prep. Only when you consistently score around your target score in official mocks, you are good to go! The scores secured in mocks provided by different prep companies are not comparable. So, don't rely too much on it.

Coming to OG, OG may be a great source for solving GMAT like questions, however, it is definitely not the ideal way to prepare in your case. Moreover, you may find that the OG is a good option as a question bank but lacks detailed explanations for you to use for improvement. It’s always better to prepare with a definitive resource to help you learn concepts while formulating a consistent strategy to solve questions before practicing them from the OG. This way, your preparation will be a lot more structured, and the chances of you leaving gaps in your learning will be significantly less. Focus on improving the method you follow to solve questions because that's what stops people from scoring 700+. Furthermore, you may find that the MGMAT guides aren’t very helpful as they’re targeted more towards native speakers of English. As such, following a resource which focuses on the right methodologies becomes even more crucial.

The importance of using a standard resource:

The only method to make sure that you invest your time, money and effort in an effective way is to use a standard resource which teaches you the concepts, strategies and also helps you work on your weaker areas. Studying using OG or a few random resources might help you to solve GMAT like questions but I’m afraid that they won’t be able to help you much from a strategy perspective.

I would suggest you to follow one standard course for your preparation which can help you prepare in a structured and efficient manner thereby increasing your productivity. It’s always better to spare some more time on your preparation until you are ready instead of missing out on your dream colleges/ b-schools in hurry.

Feel free to reach out in case of any queries!
