I have read many materials on how to start learning for the GMAT. Should I start with the practice question area, or should I take the Practice Exam 1 test, which lasts 03:07:00, to discover my strengths and weaknesses?
You should take one practice exam first. Take it properly, without breaks or pauses, in the allotted time.
This will tell you roughly where you stand and give you an idea what you're up against when you take the GMAT. It will also give you some idea of strengths and weaknesses, though that's not the main purpose of doing the test.
After that, do not jump straight into solving practice questions. For most test takers, that is not a good way to prepare,
not unless your knowledge and skills are already at a high level. For example, someone who scores 750 in the first practice exam can just do some practice questions and book a date to take the GMAT.
Most of us need to prepare in a systematic way, one topic at a time. Gmatclub has many good recommendations for resources to use and study plans to follow.
