Forgetting SC rules when attempting questions with lots of fluff

Question

Hi,

I am not able to check rules when trying to do SC questions from Guides. For example, I am unable to see "and" as parallelism marker. Or, I am not able to check subject verb pair.

Also I am having trouble understanding tenses.

Kindly suggest how to get through this issue.

Consider leveraging the gmatclub forum to filter for sub/verb questions. In the posts below the question, there may be helpful insight into how the "rules" work. Manhattan-Prep's 6th Edition for SC may also be helpful to go over these core fundamentals.

Might also be worth checking out YouTube for videos that go over GMAT Sentence Correction fundamentals. Although the GMAT Knight blog has some videos that go over SC questions, they are more like tips.

Make a checklist of steps you need to do and rules you need to check.

For example,
- remove fluff and find the core sentence 
- identify verbs
- find the subject for each verb
- check subject-verb agreement
- check if the sentence has any parallelism markers
- if it does, then check parallelism
- check if the sentence has any pronouns
- ...
- (and so on)

hey i was going through same stuff,the thing is in order to excel in SC you need to practiced so much that you dont need to remember any rules at the time of solving but it should naturally comes to you how to pick and wrong answer and cross it off.

Sounds to me like this is a process-issue. If you do in fact understand the rules of subject-verb agreement and parallelism, what are you actually *doing* when reading sentences?

I find that most students stick to 'the way they read' in SC. They learn all these rules, but then don't have a process to apply them. They just read the sentence, top to bottom, left to right. Then they read the answer choices. Top to bottom. Left to right. There's no structural analysis happening. You say you are unable to see 'and' as a parallelism marker... But do you STOP every time you see the word 'and' in a sentence and ask, "WHAT IS THIS 'AND' CONNECTING?"

'And' (along with other conjunctions) does, basically, two things: it joins clauses or builds parallel structure.

If you don't have a process to notice and use the rules you learn, if you just default to the old way of reading, you'll miss the chance to use what you've studied.
