I've also been told that you should waive your right to view the recommendation letters during the process. Can anybody verify that? I never understood why and I didn't do that last year when I applied to schools because I didn't read until after submitting that it was looked down upon to not waive your right.

Yes. It shows that you trust those who will be writing the recommendations. When it comes to applications for other graduate schools, it is pretty much given that you will waive your right to view.

I think waiving the right to see the recommendation is not a must, and it doesn't affect admission chances. It is just a sign for credibility. Anyway, if you don't waive your right it doesn't mean you will be able to see the recommendation during the application process, only after you get to the school.
