I have scheduled my gmat test for 25-aug. For most of the schools, app submisstion for R1 starts in sept. Given the fact that it takes a while to prepare the app, do I still stand a chance to apply for 2013 intake?

How much time does it take to prepare an app?

I took my GMAT at the end of October last year and had enough time to apply for Round 2 for my schools. You have 2 months on me so unless you have to retake the GMAT you should have ample time.

You have enough time, don't worry.

If you have already shortlisted schools, have a fair idea of the amount of effort involved in writing essays, and have spoken with your recommenders and can get your recommendations in time, then you even have a shot at applying to schools in R1.

If even one of the above conditions is not met, apply in R2.

Whichever way you look at it, you definitely have a shot this year.
