Hello, first post here.

I am having a very hard time finding extracurricular activities since I have not been constant with my community involvement.

So far I have thought of reading (I enjoy 20th century authors a lot), I read like 30-40 books a year (actually I audio read near half of them) and I am also a fan of Zombie comics, literature, videogames and movies (should I include this).

But I do not know if I should include these ones for a number of reasons:
-Veganism - is this considered an activity? I have done a lot of research and enjoy exploring vegan cuisine but I do not cook much since I live alone.
-Nutritional/health advisor - I keep updated with nutrition advances and diets for different goals, I have also helped around 20 persons to lose/gain weight. I do not charge for these services though.
-Yoga/Meditation - I did these frequently but since I was very busy with CFA and GMAT, I haven't been frequent in the last 9 months.

I think these would be in line with my "short and long term goals essay" in which I put that I want to work in the food & beverage industry and detailed some profitable strategies that would make healthier products more affordable in emerging markets.

Also, do these qualifyas "strong" activities? I am worried I have not done any community service in year.

Thanks in advance,
Armando

Schools look at your activities not just to see that you "do things", but that you have leadership potential. This is why the consultant above said that your weight Health Advisor thing may weakly qualify. Think about activities (even smaller ones) where you had an opportunity to lead something or influence others. It would be more impactful than yoga or reading for instance.

Thanks a lot for both replies.

I understand. I was a founding member and leader of cometitiviness in a club of my college, however that was 6 years ago. Should I give it a higher order of importance albeit I feel more identified with the others?

Also, I was wondering if CFA is considered an extracurricular?

Six years ago is a stretch unfortunately. In regards to the CFA, I apply the same logic above. What is the CFA? It is a great certification and proves that you have the analytical horsepower to learn a lot of finance. But is it a strong indicator that you will be a great leader someday? Not necessarily.

Agreed - if your last meaningful involvement activity was 6 years ago, that's a flag. And a CFA is wonderful (good job!) but it speakss to an entirely separate aspect of your profile. Leadership aside, it's simply not related to this aspect of what makes you, you!

Hello armandopn1985,

Thank you for sharing your challenge. Many professionals find it difficult to be meaningfully engaged with their community involvement.

I agree with QiuYidio: "Schools look at your activities not just to see that you "do things", but that you have LEADERSHIP POTENTIAL." To further this point, schools are looking for activities that demonstrate passion, commitment, and great communication skill.

One suggestion: you can easily connect with your community and further your leadership skill-set by becoming a volunteer management consultant for a local non-profit or small business in need. Consider one of the organizations below as a time-efficient way to gain a career-enhancing and personally-rewarding experience.

1) SCORE
2) Taproot Foundation
3) USA Leadership Corps

These organizations recruit, train, and match motivated professionals like yourself with small businesses or nonprofits in need of business planning or strategic development assistance.

Thank you again for sharing your question, armandopn1985. Good luck.
