I am a 30-year-old female with an MPH degree and 1 year of work experience. I will be applying in 2018 ( class of 2020). I am currently volunteering at a local non-profit and working as an unpaid intern on a research project. I will be appearing for GMAT in November 2017.What can I do or what independent projects I can undertake to improve my chances of getting into one of the top B schools in US?

The biggest hurdle is your first sentence... I am 30 yr old female with MPH degree and [color=#ff0000][color=#ff0000]1 year of experience[/color]. So the one year is on the light side for MBA programs- so what you should try to do is highlight other past work even if it was part of your masters program. You need to emphasize professional work in some fashion as that is what I see as the big need.
