Bloomberg US Business Schools' Ranking 2018
One of the biggest dilemmas for any applicant is choosing a Bschool that is a good fit for him. Multiple big players such as FT, US News, and Bloomberg come up with their rankings each year. This dilemma becomes especially nasty when one has an admit from multiple schools.
Recently, Bloomberg released the US Bschool rankings for 2018. I was surprised by the results: Tuck, Ross and a few other schools saw a significant change in their rankings. Especially, Ross and Tuck that have always been amongst the top 10 schools moved down to 18th and 19th spot respectively.
Bloomberg surveyed MBA students, alumni, and recruiters in 2018 about their goals and experiences. The U.S. rankings are based on their responses, as well as compensation and job-placement data from each school.
Bloomberg used 4 parameters to arrive at a score on a scale of 100. Following are the parameters with the weightage given to an individual parameter to arrive at the final rank:
1. Compensation (38.5%)
2. Networking (27.9%)
3. Learning (23.1%)
4. Entrepreneurship (10.5%)
The weightage of each parameter was reached upon by the answers given by each stakeholder - alumni, recruiters, and students. Most importance was given to the answers of alumni and least to those of the students. I believe this is a very unique set of parameters used to rank the schools; the outcome becomes even more important because of the fact that a large number of alumni and students themselves were involved in this survey.
However, per me, this survey might also have a 'bias' factor. The alumni and students have a natural tendency to be biased towards their school. The number of students that replied to the survey surged by 11% from the number in 2017 to 10,473; the number of alumni increased by more than 50% to 15,050. Thus, the results might have been inflated/deflated. It's difficult to predict whether the results are unbiased because the exact algorithm and survey questions are unknown.
My question to all: do the ranks make sense? - does this data represent the true picture of a school's caliber?
