Hi,

I recently gave Gmat and have a score of 760. Now that the process of applying to B-school starts, I am a bit confused about which would be the appropriate schools I should apply to. Below is a brief of my profile, kindly suggest.

Nationality: Indian

experience: 10+ years in power plant operations in the largest public-sector power generation company in India.

International Work Experience: None.
I don't have any international work experience but I have been volunteering for the Google help forum since 2007 (13 years). It has given me the opportunity to closely interact with people from across the globe. I have been working with these Google product users and the Google community managers very closely to help resolve the issues faced by users with Google products. I have visited countries across the globe- USA, Singapore, UK, & Australia to attend the Google summits and work in person closely with the Google team and hence have a lot of cross-cultural exposure.

I started a non-profit venture in May 2020, given the nationwide lockdown. I started a venture to take online Yoga classes and meditation for the people, so as to help them stay fit even when they can't go out and exercise and meditation to help them relax and retain the mental strength amid the pandemic crisis. The venture is still running and has successfully enlarged.

Expectation post MBA: want to shift Industry/role from Energy/operations management to technology/strategy or consulting

Below are the few colleges I am looking at given my score, please suggest if the following make sense given my profile:
1- INSEAD (preferable Singapore)
2- London Business School
3- MIT Sloan (2 years regular MBA program)
4- Kelloggs- 1 Year MBA
5- Yale (2 years regular MBA program)
6- Harvard
7- Stanford Business School
8- Oxford
9- Cambridge
10-Hec Paris
11- IIM A PGPX

Thanks in Advance!

Hi there,

At the first glance itself, your profile stands out with exemplary achievements under your belt. Your GMAT score of 760 is very impressive and will allow you to target most of the top-notch B-schools. However, you need to understand that though the main prerequisite for an MBA program is a good duration of work experience, you also need to highlight your academic records such as your GPA which you haven't mentioned here.

Coming to your work experience, you have more than 10 years of work experience which is quite impressive especially when it comes to an MBA program. Here you have mentioned that you have got the opportunity to visit different countries through your involvement with google summits wherein you can highlight the main learnings from these somewhat international experiences. Through these experiences, you can basically showcase your broadened perspectives and adaptability. Moreover, since you are applying for an MBA program which is a managerial degree, you should also focus on highlighting the instances wherein you’ve taken the lead and spearheaded initiatives. Furthermore, this can be taken up a notch by elaborating on the kind of events you organized, duties you performed, and most importantly highlight what were your major takeaways. Most importantly, you have started your own non-profit venture which is praiseworthy as it showcases how you have the potential to create a positive impact in every endeavor you undertake, a trait which is very much valued by these B-schools.

Furthermore, your participation in extracurricular activities is equally important as it will showcase a holistically developed profile which is what the schools are looking for. Needless to say, you definitely possess a decent hold on your extracurricular activities through your active involvement with google products as well as your non-profit initiative. However, to further boost your profile you can also talk about any major certifications that you undertook to highlight your constant thirst for knowledge and upscaling your skills.

Now talking about the schools you are targeting, all the schools fall under the dream category (where your chances of acceptance is 50%). However, you can increase your chances of acceptance by focusing on the kind of application you are submitting. Your application is basically what differentiates you by highlighting your strengths and overshadowing your weaknesses.

Moreover, you need to hedge your bets wisely by targeting a good mix of dream and competitive schools. Under the competitive schools (where your chances of acceptance are 60-70%), you can consider schools such as NYU, FORSTER, MICHIGAN, FORDHAM, BURKLEY, and USC MARSHALL.

All things considered, I would suggest that you apply in the upcoming round to leverage the first-mover advantage and ensure a higher chance of getting accepted. That said, if you want to avail more in-depth and personalized suggestions regarding your application which holds 30% value in your selection process, you can book a FREE 20-minute consulting session with one of our expert consultants who will help chalk out a winning strategy that would boost your chances of acceptance by a minimum of 3x!
