I know many of you have a big concern on GMAT because this could be the most difficult test that we have ever encountered in our life! We have invested so much time, money, effort and yet there is no sign of improvement. And when we ask adcom about our concern on low GMAT (please, I am not those students who claim I have a low GMAT score when I have 710, this is complete BS -.-), they will always say we will use a holistic review to review each application and no one area is more important than the other.
Sounds Great isn't it??? Too good to be true isn't it??? So I can happily submit an application with a GMAT score that is >60 pt below the mean/median score and thinking that the rest of my application is very strong, so I will still stand a chance right? And on the result release date, I still hoping that I will open up the notification letter that starts "Dear xxx, Congratulation on your admission blah blah blah...."
The answer is.... Yes!!! You are absolutely right that it is too good to be true. A >60 pt GMAT score below the mean/median will not give you any chances at all (unless you are the CEO of some fortune 500 companies, olympics winner, etc.). A -60 pt score is a big red flag to the adcom especially when they have so many strong applicants applying to their program.
However, they will tell you this because they just don't want to discourage you from applying. May be you have something so unique and strong in your application that you don't realize and they like it. But all I am saying is that are you the CEO of some fortune 500 companies, olympics winner, etc? If not, then pls focus on your GMAT and work on it. I would say that adcom will disregard a -30 pt difference, but anything more than a -30 pt, good luck and all the best....
