For an Indian male engineer, there is nothing called 'safety school' - just my personal view. If you think T10s are going to be your safeties, then think again.
Your post is missing the inputs on 'why MBA and what post-MBA' - these will be crucial parts of your prep.
Your choice of R2 in Jan 2026 vs R1 2026 (for 2027) will hinge on improvement in GMAT to 705+. The 70-day countdown to R2 is already on, and you may want to avoid being a reapplicant in R1 in Fall 2026.
I wouldn't advise trying to do something now on ECAs, unless it's a continuity of what you had been doing previously.

Hi everyone! I’m kicking off my application journey for Round 2 this cycle and would love feedback on my chances at M7/T10 programs.
Background
  • 27-year-old Indian male
  • Front Office Quant Strategist at a US bulge-bracket bank
  • Previously worked at another top US bank in a risk management role
  • Integrated Bachelors + Masters from a top IIT (GPA: 8.5+/10)
Test Score
  • GMAT FE: 675 → Aware this is on the lower side for my demographic; retaking in a week and targeting a meaningful improvement
Extracurriculars / Leadership
  • Organized multiple student workshops at IITs
  • Led hackathons and campus engagement initiatives while representing my previous employer
  • Realize this lacks sustained community impact and proactive social leadership — something I’m trying to improve going forward
Recommendations
  • VP and ED from my previous firm — both very supportive and will provide strong endorsements
Target Schools
  • M7: Wharton, Booth, CBS, Kellogg
  • Europe: LBS, INSEAD, HEC
  • Considering a couple of T10 U.S. schools as relative safeties
Concerns
  • GMAT score needs to improve significantly
  • Extracurricular/community impact could be stronger — currently my weakest application area
Would appreciate honest feedback on:
  1. Chance range for the schools listed (assuming GMAT improves)
  2. Whether my extracurriculars raise a red flag
I’m also open to applying in R1 next year if that gives me more time to improve — would love guidance on whether that’s the smarter move and what to prioritize between now and then.
Thanks in advance — would love to hear your thoughts!

Hi aman2598 ! With your technical pedigree (IIT), front-office quant experience, and strong recommenders, you seem to have a decent profile, but GMAT 675 can be a material weakness for the M7 cohort. All the best for the retake. Your extracurriculars are not a red flag, but they’re a modest weak spot compared with typical M7 admits who show sustained community impact. You can fix this with leadership initiatives that produce measurable impact.

Integrated BTech+MTech from a top IIT (GPA ~8.5), good academic anchor and brand signal. Front Office Quant Strategist at a US bulge-bracket bank + prior top-tier bank risk role = excellent finance/quant credibility. Recruiters and adcoms value this combination of front-office exposure plus risk background. VP & ED recommenders are fine and can be appropriate for your level, excellent.

M7 adcoms prefer sustained community leadership or clear social impact (multi-year or scaling initiatives). Your hackathons and workshops are good, but tend to read as short-term, campus/industry contributions rather than long-term civic leadership.

Start targeted alumni outreach now: alumni across your schools of interest, focusing on those with quant/finance backgrounds and those who recruit in quant/strategy. Alumni advocacy matters.

We would love to learn more about your academic background, extracurricular activities, professional experiences, and personal journey so we can offer a more tailored assessment of your profile and evaluate your chances at your target schools more accurately. Feel free to book a profile evaluation session.

You have a really strong profile. IIT background, front-office quant at a bulge bracket, solid professional trajectory. Based on the results of my past clients, your profile stacks up well against those I've helped earn M7 admits. You’re already playing in the big leagues.

I agree, the GMAT needs to come up a bit, but if you can land in the 700-715+ range, you’ll be right in the mix for M7. I’ve worked with plenty of clients with similar stats and helped them land admits and scholarships at Wharton, Booth, CBS, etc. by helping them build interesting stories and applications.

Just remember, especially if you're looking to fill in your extracurricular experience a little, this process is less about stacking more technical achievements and more about showing who you are beyond your resume.

Depending on your goals and story (values, passions, background, etc), I think the best way to approach your extracurricular concerns is to dive into something that requires real ownership of something people-focused. That could be mentoring, leading a new initiative at work (outside of your responsibilities), or lending your data skills to a social cause. For Rd. 2, you'd need to jump in immediately. And to avoid the appearance of "resume stuffing," make sure it connects to your passion and allows you to make an impact.

Finally, I absolutely believe you could take a swing in Round 2, especially if your GMAT jumps. But if you want to maximize outcomes, giving yourself time to build the story for Round 1 next year could be the stronger play (especially since you're not looking at HBS and GSB, programs that prefer younger candidates). With the right guidance, I am sure you could be a serious contender at multiple M7 programs.

aman2598 - Your IIT pedigree, GPA and work-ex present strong angles. The GMAT score is fine, but a higher score (ideally 20-30+ points) can help improve chances particularly at USTop10 programs.

I'd like to understand your work-ex better (e.g. roles, achievements, international exposure, leadership stints, etc.) to assess the professional arc.

Reg. extracurriculars, think broadly about any activities and interests you've been involved in, and its results. Many candidates tend to underestimate their impact. For instance, we helped our recent Yale admit (success debrief here) by building a holistic narrative around his hiring activities at work that resulted in women hires, and our recent INSEAD admit (success debrief here) by building a holistic narrative around her volunteering activities.

Applying in R2 (to a mix of Ambitious/ Reach/ Safe schools) would depend on your updated GMAT score and the amount of efforts you can dedicate to the applications. Alternatively, you could consider applying to a few schools in R2 (to test the waters) and the rest in R1 next year.

Hope this helps. Feel free to reach out for a discussion.

Arvind

Hi aman2598
Priyanka here from ARINGO. Speaking about your profile, your IIT background, front-office quant role, and career progression in top-tier finance are exactly the kind of credentials that AdComs at M7/T10 schools look for.

The 8.5+ GPA from IIT gives you a solid academic base, and your quant-heavy background will help you stand out for analytical and finance-focused programs like Booth, Wharton, or CBS. Your professional experience is top-notch, but your extracurricular profile is where you’re most exposed. Organizing workshops and leading hackathons shows initiative, but top schools want to see consistent, values-driven involvement, ideally something that reflects leadership or impact outside work. Since you have time, it would be smart to build something sustainable, volunteer mentorship, teaching, or even starting a small social/educational initiative tied to your interests could go a long way.

I’d be happy to offer you a free profile review for your target programs to see where you stand and how to boost your chances, happy to help!
No pressure, no strings - just helpful insights on where you stand and how you can strengthen your chances.
