Calling All Engineers: POLL

Question

I want to know, for all those concidered Engineers, why type of engineer are you? And do you know if all engineers are concidered the same group, or does IT concidered its own group.

Also Please state if you are Indian IT, vs US IT. (seems Indian IT is a very very competative group)

Well it's just retarded that when I say I'm an engineer, everyone thinks I build computers (partly due to Asian Males in my 20's)

Um.... how about IC design engineer?
I don't see a choice for EE if you want to be more generalized.
I think here is a good place to mention my pet peeve -- I don't really consider IT the same as engineering, a distant cousin at best.

BTW, as for supply management engineer, I would expect this to be the technical engineer for the sourcing group who evaluates vendor capabilities, etc.

A civil engineer here (with a specialization in Transportation engineering). Currently assisting the US Government in managing a $100 million/year (yes, it is a huuuge program) program called Intelligent Transportation Systems.

reminds me of my friend who works at nike -- where anyone who is working on something computer-related is considered in "IT." it annoys me to no end when people use IT and engineering interchangeably...

There! Changed a couple of the poll questions. Tranporation would be Government right? EE now has it's own catagory.

But to answer your question, supplier managment engineers deal more with supply chain, schedule, planning, assembly simulations, vendors. We have a ton of these at my companies, they are all degree engineers, but I don't really see any engineering being done, except maybe the assembly simulations. We're not a manufacturing company anymore the new hip term is "large system integrator."

I broke down the catagories into function rather than degree since I see engineers going all over the place after they graduate (actuary, finance, consulting) and I think it would be more fair to lump everyone by function and industry. I'm assuming that's what the adcoms do.

I work at the intersection of Supply Chain Management and IT. My undergrad was Mech. Eng, M.S in Industrial Engineering - thats what is Supply Chain Management, Manufacturing, Logistics.

I am now an IT Consultant specializing in eCommerce solutions, which is inherently related to supply or demand chain. I would not really call myself an engineer at this point though.

Your poll still does not have the complete list of big four. You are missing Chemical Engineering. Atleast from my knowledge the big four are Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Chemical.

I am a Korean-American with a BS in Chemical Engineering, 1st year out of UG. I would say I am not in my stereotypical role, and I am also not in IT.

Hi guys!

I'm what we call in Spain Telecom Engineer! Antennae, radar, radio frequency, high frequency... telecommunications!!

I think the closest type in the poll is Electrica Engineer.

I specialized in aeronautic military telecommunications (have you heard something about A400M?)

But... I don't how, I'm working in IB :oops:

This is starting to look like what I expected a typical engineer applicant pool to be made up of. 50% IT/electrical.

I was a nuclear engineer for the government so I put gov. I must say that many of the engineers I have met have very unique experience or went to top schools and worked for the very top companies. The engineer from an average state school who just works at a typical engineering firm wont stand out like someone who either has a career path that is very selective/unusual or who worked at the blue chip companies.

Not to discourage you but engineers wanting to change careers are a dime a dozen. I think engineers who did job site work actually have the best success since they managed people and projects in a very dynamic way.
