State Residency during Business School

Question

Hey everyone!

Just happened to be thinking about the 2016 election today.. I will be in Year One of my MBA program, which will not be in the state in which I currently live.

So... does anyone know how state residency works during grad school? For voting, driver's license, car registration, etc.

I'm curious as well, especially for the purpose of in-state tuition (if you are attending a public B-school). Shouldn't almost everyone pay in-state tuition during the second year?

I think, in general, you have to have lived in the state during the 12 months prior to your initial matriculation to be eligible for in state tuition, regardless of which year of school you are in. (This may vary from state to state)

If you officially move, which you will as long as you get an apartment, pay rent, internet bill etc, you can register to vote right away in most states as well as get a driver's license.

Something to think of regarding residency...do you have family that live in the state (ideally your parents)? Are you or your parents military? There might be some workarounds to establishing residency. I was able to do it based on the fact my parents still lived in the state where I went to school
