Hi,

I don't have too many people around me who've either pursued or who plan to pursue an MBA and that's why I'm looking to figure out where I stand.

-27 y/o Indian Male (will turn 29 by the time I start in 2016)

-GMAT 710 (49Q, 39V)

-Graduated in 2008 from a business school in UK with a degree in accounting and finance. Topped my degree in year one. Ended up with an upper 2.1 degree.

-planned on working in UK itself in order to get some international work ex but had to move back to India because of my fathers death (3 weeks after final term). Had to take care of family affairs so moved back.

-working in the business development and strategy implementation division of a firm with interests across hydropower, textiles and education and annual revenues of over $100m. Have worked across all 3 sectors. Currently leading a team in implementing the expansion/diversification of the education vertical. The project is at an advanced stage of implementation and the financial rewards from the project have already started flowing in. The idea for diversification was my brainchild and thus I was made the team leader of the project. I'm also the youngest at the firm at a senior managerial role. I've held leadership roles across all the 3 verticals.

-short term goal is to make a transition to a top tier management consulting firm and work in new geographies (outside of India). Long term goal is to take up a senior management role at a fortune 500 firm. In my current role I'm coming up with and executing ideas that lead to improvement in business process and create value for the firm. I think a career in consulting will be a reasonable sell as my STG.

-Extra curricular: work with one of the most prominent environmental NGO in the country. Have been closely associated with environmental research over the last 4 years. Having lost my father to blood cancer I started a cancer foundation in his name and have raised over INR 1.5m which in turn was used to help underprivileged patients in their treatment. Also organize an annual blood donation camp. Also redrafted and implemented the corporate social responsibility charter at the firm with a focus on sanitation for the poor and improving female financial literacy. I've also worked for a member of parliament from 2009-2013 on devising a plan for development in the members parliamentary constituency.

-Target schools- INSEAD's definitely my dream school. I don't have international work experience but I'm hoping that the fact the I studied abroad for 3 years and that my extenuating circumstances made me move back to India will help with my application at Insead.

-Besides Insead I'd like to find out which other schools I can apply to?

Hey Namita,

Basically looking for schools with a good brand name and high employment rate for international students. In terms of geographies I'm open to most but my first preference would be a school in the US.

INSEAD prefers people with high international work experience, I do not want to discourage you but want to caution you that you should keep your options open to avoid disappointment.

If you are looking for places where the international students stand higher chances to get an employment after MBA, I would say recommend Canada, other parts of Asia or Australia. US has its own challenges to get a work permit after MBA.

To conclude, if you are looking for quality education, go to US or Europe, but if you want to work outside India then I would recommend to explore options in Canada, other parts of Asia and Australia. In terms of schools, AGSM (Australia), Rotman/Schulich/Queesns/Ivey (Canada) and other asian schools (HKUSY, NUS, KHU) are good options.

Hey thanks for your response. I completely agree that Insead's a long shot given the lack of international work experience but I'm hoping that through the essays I'll be able to make them understand the reasons why I had to move back to India right after my undergrad studies. Also although I'm hoping that the fact that I deal with international clients (mostly in latin america and europe) on a regular basis and also train our employees who are stationed internationally, will help me display my international mindset to Insead.

The only other European school that I'm currently considering is LBS.

I'm not too keen on going to Australia or Canada. I would ideally like to pursue an MBA from an American B-School or a top European school such as LBS or Insead, as they hold a lot of weight all around the world in terms of brand recognition. So in this regards I was wondering if you could suggest some suitable US/European B-Schools that I could apply to.

Thanks for your note.

If you think you can make a strong case, you can apply to INSEAD.

You mentioned that you are looking for schools where international students stand higher chances to get an employment after MBA. There are two factors that impact the way MBAs are hired post-MBA

1) Quality of Education
2) Regulations for work permit or residency or sponsorship

Some of the European Schools are known to impart the best education, so you are ready to deliver results. However, if the 2nd part of that country does not allow you to stay in that respective country to work then you have a challenge that you might have to go back to your home country. Once you go back to you home country (India in your case), organizations may/may not hesitate to take you at a senior level since your MBA is from different region and you will be competing with students from ISB and IIMs. Regional schools teach basics of Business Management but still every region has different business models. So, if you are planning to go to European schools - you should keep a backup plan as well.

For US - there are challenges with H1B and I have seen most of the IT guys securing H1B and combining their IT and Management skills to contribute to the organization.

I do not want to discourage you, but I am just sharing my research with you and I would recommend that you should do an extensive research on what happens when international students graduate. Above all, Indian IT talent is required all around world, so even if you see a few successful international students being placed after MBA, you should talk to them and listen to their stories.
