Although Norway is today a Lutheran nation and thus not much associated with saints and miracles, the legend of Sunniva survives there as a testament to earlier values. On the island of Selja, there remain ruins of a great Christian center. Churches dating back to the 900s and a large monastery from somewhat later are part of the Selja ruins. On the island, too, is a large cave, where the legend is mostly set.
Sunniva was the Christian daughter of Irish King Otto. She was pursued by a heathen Viking, who wanted her hand in marriage. Seeking asylum, she set off in three ships with her followers, but her ships foundered without sails or oars, and she was castaway on the island of Selja. There she lived with her followers, pious men and women known as the seljumun, or “holy ones.” The islanders suspected the strangers of eating their grazing animals, and they called on Earl Håkon to attack them and remove them from the island. Sunniva and her followers hid in a cave, but as their pursuers came near, the cave collapsed.
After that came a series of miracles. People reported seeing rays of light and smelling sweet odors emanating from the cave. Christian King Olav had the cave opened and found Sunniva’s undisturbed body, which he placed in a crypt inside a church he built for her. The island became a site for pilgrimages and a major focus of Olav’s Christianization of Norway. Sunniva is now the patron saint of Western Norway and particularly of Bergen.
