I would rather reckon E is the correct choice for syntactic reasons. We can dump A for improper modification and C for improper tense and change of menaing.

In B and D, let us look into the role of the parenthesis. We all know a parenthetical stuff is no more than an adjunct and has no strength on its own to mingle with his main sentence. On the contrary, if that info is essential to meaningfully complete the sentence, then the parenthesis usage is ungrammatical. In the given case, the parenthesis info if ignored leads to fragments. Therefore, B and D have dubious syntax. E has no such problems.

I picked E...B was very tempting but the meaning of B gave it away

Traveling across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest, in 1945 Ansel Adams began his photographic career.

A) Traveling across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest, in 1945 Ansel Adams began his photographic career.
traveling & shooting should modify ansel adams and not 1945.

B) In 1945, Ansel Adams began his photographic career, traveling across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest.
ing modifier should modify ansel adams and not the entire clause.
If the verb-ing modifier appears after a clause and is preceded by a comma, then it modifies the entire preceding clause. It

a. either presents additional information about the preceding clause,
b. or presents the result of the preceding clause.

A - AA began his photographic career
how did he do it? by traveling and shooting? - doesn't make any sense.
B - not the case.

C) Having traveled across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest, in 1945 Ansel Adams began his photographic career.
having - unnecessary
furthermore, same error as in A.

D) Ansel Adams, in 1945 began his photographic career, traveling across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest.
the construction is bad! very bad!

E) Traveling across and shooting the vast expanse of the Southwest, Ansel Adams began his photographic career in 1945.
traveling and shooting modifies ansel adams. correct
