"unlike some other number of periods" is misplaced, it must refer to "the division of the day into twenty-four hours".
The sentence seems to say that a division in any other number of periods would not be random.

As always the presence of "being" makes the sentence look suspicious. The "day being divided" gives the idea of an on going action (also in B this happens).
