The answer will be "D".
Reasons being:-
1) "The division" is singular, so "is" is required which eliminates options "A" and "E".
2) Options "B" and "C" use "Being" which is to be avoided in GMAT as it makes sentences "Passive".

The division of the day into twenty-four hours, rather than into some other number of periods, are essentially random, and most people can scarcely imagine dividing the day in any other way.

A)hours, rather than into some other number of periods, are essentially random, and most people can scarcely imagine dividing the day
The Subject in non-underlined portion is Singular (Division), so singular verb must be used. Use of AND distorts the intended meaning of the sentence. Incorrect

B)hours is essentially random, unlike some other number of periods, and yet most people can scarcely imagine the day being divided
Incorrect comparison between Division and Unlike some other number of periods is incorrect. Moreover there is no need to use BEING. Incorrect

C)hours, unlike some other number of periods, is essentially random, despite the fact that people can scarcely imagine the day being divided
There is no need to use BEING. Moreover, DESPITE changes the meaning of the sentence.
It seems Division is some impact of lack of people imagination. But the author wants that these two activities are not cause n effectIncorrect

D)hours, rather than into some other number of periods, is essentially random, yet most people can scarcely imagine dividing the day
Correct

E)hours are essentially random, unlike other numbers of periods; people can scarcely imagine the day being divided
The Subject in non-underlined portion is Singular (Division), so singular verb must be used. Placement of comparison marker "unlike other numbers of periods" is incorrect. Moreover there is no need to use BEING. Incorrect

Can you please explain why "unlike some other number of periods" in option B is incorrect? I can't seem to understand that part. It "sounded" wrong to me, but why?

A)hours, rather than into some other number of periods, are essentially random, and most people can scarcely imagine dividing the day ---- 'The division--- are '---SV error

B)hours is essentially random, unlike some other number of periods, and yet most people can scarcely imagine the day being divided --- 1. The division compared to some other number is comparison error. 2. the day being divided is unacceptable

C)hours, unlike some other number of periods, is essentially random, despite the fact that people can scarcely imagine the day being divided --- same errors as in B.

D)hours, rather than into some other number of periods, is essentially random, yet most people can scarcely imagine dividing the day --- correct choice.

E) hours are essentially random, unlike other numbers of periods; people can scarcely imagine the day being divided -- the division… are --- SV error. Also, the day being divided is unacceptable.
