There are only two elements in the list. So, an "and" is required before " rose to become ...". That is why we choose E over A.

Barely seventeen and leading the French army wearing a man’s armor, Joan of Arc, an illiterate peasant girl from the French countryside, broke the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, rose to become an instant national heroine, while other generals dreaded to stand up to the English and wanted to capitulate.

(A) broke the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, rose to become an instant national heroine, while other generals dreaded The list of things attributable to Joan of Arc number only two (broke..... , rose....) and hence an "and" is required in between them. Eliminate.

(B) breaking the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, and rose to become an instantly national heroine, while other generals were dreading "breaking" and "rose" are not parallel. Eliminate.

(C) had broken the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, and risen to become an instantly national heroine, while other generals had dreaded There is no need to use the past perfect forms "had broken" and "had...risen" since the sentence is not looking to order between two events happening in the past. Eliminate.

(D) would break the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, thus rising to become an instant national heroine, while other generals would dread "would break" is incorrect as we are talking in the past tense. Also, "would break" is not parallel to "thus rising". Eliminate.

(E) broke the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, and rose to become an instant national heroine, while other generals dreaded Correct answer - "broke" is parallel to "rose", there is an "and" separating the two items of the list and no new errors are introduced.

Hope this helps.

I understand why E is the best choice as we need "and" to fix the parallelism issue, but I don't understand why we need a comma before "and." For example, if there was an additional answer choice that didn't include the comma, and I was down to the following:
1. "broke the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days and rose to become an instant national heroine, while other generals dreaded"
2. "broke the seven month-old seize of Orleans in nine days, and rose to become an instant national heroine, while other generals dreaded"

I would be more compelled to choose 1...

Would anyone be able to help with this question?
