Quote:
why not A... it should be retains.. pls explain
the original poster has not underlined the question properly !!
the last portion has "their" in the underlined portion --->this means that we should be using "Alzheimer's victims" and not "Alzheimer's victim" .hence "retain" is correct while "retains" is wrong !!

The causal link between overexposure to aluminum and Alzheimer's disease is a tenuous one; some scientists hold that aluminum buildup in the body causes Alzheimer's, but others speculate that the Alzheimer's victim simply retains more ingested aluminum and aluminum compounds in their bodies.

A) that the Alzheimer's victim simply retains more ingested aluminum
- the usage of 'their' in the phrase that follows the underlined portion indicates that the subject of the underlined portion must be plural. In (A), the subject of the underlined portion (the victim) is singular.

B) the Alzheimer's victim simply retains more of the aluminum he or she has ingested
- Has the same subject-verb agreement as in (A)

C) that Alzheimer's victims, simply retaining more ingested aluminum
- here, the 'that' clause is incomplete. With (C), the sentence effectively becomes: "....., but others speculate that the Alzheimer's victims,. "

D) more aluminum, simply, is retained by Alzheimer's victims
- if you are describing what the speculation is all about, then the word ''speculate'' must be succeeded by a 'that' clause.

E) that Alzheimer's victims simply retain more ingested aluminum - has no error. Hence, (E) is the right answer choice.
